Low Rise Housing Competition
Completed for the City of LA’s Low Rise Design Challenge, this project uses rammed earth as its primary building material and converts an existing parking lot adjacent to the Highland Park Metro Station into a new Housing Cooperative made up of 9 residential units, a commercial space, and a community garden.
The cooperative model for this project comes from European cities such as Berlin, Zurich, & others where the city maintains ownership the land and leases it to the cooperative typically on a 100-year lease. This suggests a different model for affordable housing, indirectly subsidized by the city, in which developers, architects, and residents of the cooperative are all incentivized to think longer-tem in the designing, building, and maintainance of housing.
