Saint Francis Dam Memorial

This memorial commemorates the deaths of the 400+ people who died in the catastrophic Saint Francis Dam collapse in 1928 near Santa Clarita, CA - still one of the worst natural disasters in California’s history.

The ruin-like monument reconstructs a partial footprint of the original dam, using rubble from the collapse as as aggregate in the new form. At 20’ tall, it is 1/10th the height of the dam, and meant to index the size of the original dam while relating to a more human scale. Since the site of the disaster was never sufficiently remediated, the landscape design would expand the riparian environment, bifurcating the existing arroyo to create a seasonal island for the main grounds of the memorial.

Soft Structure

Exhibition Design

Submission for the AIA 2x8 Domum exhibition, showcasing exemplary student work architecture & design institutions around California. The project consists of two “soft” columns, holding up light boxes displaying the work. The columns struggle to hold the boxes, causing slumping and deformations.
